C.E. Palmer was appointed in 1946 as Lecturer, and when he left shortly after Gerd Buchdahl became head of Department and Diana Dyason was invited to join it to give the Scientific Method lectures. Before Palmer left in 1947 some lectures had been given to medical students and a General Science course for arts students successfully established. With the appointment of Gerd Buchdahl and Diana Dyason service courses increased, and an Honours School established with some post-graduate students. In 1954 the first course was given in the Science Faculty as part of the B.Sc. degree, designed for science teachers. A Chair was established in 1974, with R.W. Home as foundation Professor appointed in 1975.
